The Chicago Cubs and Milwaukee Brewers open up a three game NL Central series at Wrigley Field on Monday afternoon.
The Milwaukee Brewers lost their fifth straight game on Sunday and in the process lost their lead in the NL Central race as they now sit tied atop the division with the Cardinals. The Brewers were swept in San Francisco over the weekend and were bullied in the process losing by a combined score of 31-8 over the three game series. Milwaukee was routed 15-5 in Sunday’s loss as starter Kyle Lohse allowed seven runs on nine hits over just 5.2 innings of work to dig a deep early hole. The offense managed nine total hits as Aramis Ramirez had two hits, Ryan Braun and Martin Maldonado each hit solo home runs, and Rickie Weeks had two hits in the loss.

Jimmy Nelson makes his tenth start of the season for the Brewers on Monday as the team looks to regain their playoff form. Nelson enters this contest with a WHIP of 1.35 and ERA of 4.10 while posting a record of 2-5. Nelson has done his best work away from home this season with an ERA of 2.16 across three starts. The 25 year old righty Nelson has yet to face the Cubs this season but had success against them in limited work in 2013 with the active Cubs roster batting just .125 against Nelson over eight total at bats.
The Chicago Cubs are merely playing spoiler to close the season but they did just that in their latest series in St. Louis splitting a four game series and forcing the Cardinals to mount a huge rally on Sunday. The Cubs raced out to a 5-0 lead in Sunday’s series finale with a big second inning but they couldn’t hold on in the end in a 9-6 loss. Travis Wood had another tough start allowing four runs on six hits while walking three over 4.2 innings and Carlos Villanueva was tagged with the loss allowing three runs in the eighth inning. The Cubs offense managed 11 hits on the afternoon as Chris Coghlan had three hits and two RBI’s, Luis Valbuena had three hits including a two run homer, and Arismendy Alcantara added a solo home run.
Jacob Turner will make his fourth appearance for the Cubs (second start) on Monday after playing for the Marlins to start the year. Turner struggled in his first start against the Reds allowing six runs (three earned) on seven hits over just 3.2 innings to take the loss. Turner has struggled plenty for the year as well as he enters this game with a WHIP of 1.63 and ERA of 5.84 while posting a 4-8 record across 23 appearances (13 starts). Turner has had success across 8.2 total innings against the Brewers allowing eight hits and not conceding a run through a start with Miami and bullpen work with Chicago.
The Brewers are slumping but are still the better team so I will ride them with caution as their bullpen is tired and they don't send a great starter to the mound here.
