USA TODAY Sports
The Washington Nationals have a six game lead in the NL East with 27 regular season games left to play. The Nationals are 34-33 on the road, 5-5 in their last 10 games, and they are coming off of a loss at Seattle on Sunday. As a team the Nationals are hitting .253 with Denard Span hitting .298, Jayson Werth hitting .287, and Anthony Rendon hitting .279. As a team the Nationals pitching staff has an ERA of 3.11 with the starters at 3.19 and the bullpen at 2.94. For game one against the Dodgers the Nationals start Gio Gonzalez who has four no decisions and five losses in his last nine starts. For the season Gonzalez has allowed 113 hits and 54 earned runs while striking out 131 over 126 innings for a 6-9 record and a 3.86 ERA.
Los Angeles is 16-5 against a left-handed starter, 21-10 in game one of a series, and 1-4 against a team with a winning record. Washington is 4-1 against a team with a winning record, 14-5 in their last 19 games, and 1-4 in Gonzalez’s last five starts as a road favorite. Washington is 2-6 in their last eight games against the Dodgers.
The Nationals are playing better baseball but Gonzalez can’t buy a win and I like the Dodgers late inning pitching better so they are my play here.
