The Toronto Blue Jays look to hold on to their slim playoff hope as they host the Tampa Bay Rays for game two of their weekend series in the AL East.
The Tampa Bay Rays are left to play spoiler at this stage of the season but they did just that on Friday night with a 1-0 win. Starting pitcher Nathan Karns pitched a gem in his first career start allowing just two hits and no runs over seven innings as Ryan Hanigan provided all the offense needed with a solo home run. James Loney had the only other hit for the Rays as Evan Longoria drew a walk going 0-3.

The Rays will look for another strong pitching performance on Saturday as Jeremy Hellickson takes the mound for his 11th start of the season. The righty Hellickson enters this contest with a WHIP of 1.31 and ERA of 3.71 while posting a record of just 1-3. Hellickson has actually been his best on the road with an ERA of 2.28 across limited work in four starts; he’s failed to solve the Blue Jays though with an ERA of 6.52 across two starts and 9.2 innings of work.
The Toronto Blue Jays snapped a four game losing streak with last night’s loss as the Jays hopes of playing postseason ball dwindle with each passing day. The Jays got a solid outing of J.A. Happ on Friday night as the lefty pitched seven innings of two hit ball allowing just one run, but the offense was non-existent in collecting just two hits. Adam Lind singled and Danny Valencia doubled in the loss but the top three players in the lineup in Reyes, Bautista, and Encarnacion all went hitless.
The Blue Jays will look to rebound behind knuckleballer R.A. Dickey on Saturday afternoon. Dickey has been up and down this season which tends to happen with a specialty pitch, as he enters this contest with a WHIP of 1.27 and ERA of 3.84 while posting a 12-12 record. Dickey has struggled against the Rays with an ERA of 5.00 across three starts and 18 innings of work this season.
Dickey hasn’t been good against the Rays but the Blue Jays are the much stronger offensive team and I expect them to bounce back after a dismal showing at the plate on Friday.
