The Arizona Diamondbacks look to play spoiler as they host the San Francisco Giants for game one of a three game series the NL West.
The San Francisco Giants lost their latest series to the Dodgers as they fell to three games back in the NL West race. The Giants still have sole possession of the first wild card spot though with a three game buffer over the Pirates. In Sunday’s 4-2 loss, the Giants failed to solve Clayton Kershaw as Yusmeiro Petit took the loss allowing four runs (three earned) on eight hits over seven innings of work. The Giants offense had seven hits in the loss as rookie catcher Andrew Susac and Joaquin Arias each had two hits and Buster Posey had a hit and drove in a run.

The Giants will look to retain their postseason berth as they send Ryan Vogelsong to the mound to open Monday’s series. Vogelsong has had mixed success this year as he enters this contest with a WHIP of 1.26 and ERA of 3.90 while posting a record of 8-10. The veteran righty Vogelsong has struggled on the road with a 5.11 ERA over 14 starts and has played to his season numbers against the DBacks across four starts.
The Arizona Diamondbacks are building towards next season with a lot of young talent getting playing time from a combination of injuries and late season trades. The Diamondbacks won their latest series over the weekend against the Padres after a horrid NL West road trip in the ten games prior where they went 2-8. In Sunday’s 8-6 win, the Arizona offense was efficient scoring eight runs on ten hits as Chris Owings and Didi Gregorious each had two hits and an RBI and Mark Trumbo and Aaron Hill each added a hit and an RBI.
The Diamondbacks will turn to left-hander Wade Miley to open Monday’s series. Miley has had his share of struggles this year entering this game with a WHIP of 1.37 and ERA of 4.28 while posting a 7-11 record. Miley has struggled at home with an ERA of 6.08 over 14 starts; he’s been better against the Giants with an ERA of 3.94 over three starts and 16 innings.
The Giants don’t send their best starter to the mound here but the price is more than reasonable to take a playoff team in the home stretch.
