The New York Yankees and the Baltimore Orioles start out their final week of the 2014 MLB regular season as they face off at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx on Monday.
For the New York Yankees this week signifies the end of an era as it is the final week of Derek Jeter’s storied career that will undoubtedly land him in the Hall of fame as he has already earned his place among Yankee greats. The Yankees won’t send Jeter out a champion though as they are 41-36 at home and just five games over .500 for the season. As a team the Yankees are hitting .245 with Jeter hitting .255, Jacoby Ellsbury hiting .271, and Brett Gardener hitting .259. For game one of this series the Yankees start Michael Pineda who missed the bulk of the season and he is 3-5 with a 2.15 ERA for the year and 0-2 with a 2.29 ERA in his last three starts. The Yankees aren’t eliminated from the post season officially so expect them to leave it all on the field.
USA TODAY Sports
The Baltimore Orioles have clinched the American League East and have turned what is generally considered baseball’s toughest divisional race into a laugher taking a 13 game lead into this week. The Orioles are 7-3 in their last 10 games, 43-31 on the road, and they are coming off of a loss in their last game. As a team the Orioles are hitting .258 with Adam Jones hitting .285, J.J. Hardy hitting .273, and Nick Markakis hitting .272. For game one the Orioles start Wei-Yin Chen who has been outstanding going 16-4 with a 2.38 ERA for the season and 2-0 with a 1.45 ERA in his last three starts. It is really just a matter of how much work the Orioles want to give their pitchers and how motivated they are.
New York is 5-1 in their last six home games, 4-1 in their last five games as a favorite, and 2-6 in Pineda’s last eight starts. Baltimore is 4-0 in their last four road games, 19-7 in game one of a series, and 5-1 in Chen’s last six starts. Baltimore has been New York in six of the last seven meetings of these two.
Expect the Orioles to just be giving players work to keep them sharp for next week but look for the Yankees to be more motivated and get the win.
