The Detroit Tigers look to close in on winning the AL Central division with another win over the Minnesota Twins.
The Minnesota Twins are just playing spoiler at this stage, but they didn’t offer much resistance on Thursday night as they lost 4-2 in Detroit. Starter Trevor May took the loss allowing three runs on five hits over six innings and the Twins offense was mostly punchless with just five hits while striking out 12 times. Joe Mauer had a two run double to plate the team’s only runs, Danny Santana and Brian Dozier each had a hit and scored, and Oswaldo Arcia had a double in the loss.

The Twins will look to rebound as Anthony Swarzak takes the mound for just his fourth start of the year after working primarily as a reliever. Swarzak enters this contest with a WHIP of 1.47 and ERA of 4.52 while posting a record of 3-2. The righty Swarzak has struggled on the road with a 6.52 ERA across 20 appearances, and has also struggled immensely against the Tigers with an ERA of 6.60 over 15 total innings including one start.
The Detroit Tigers inched closer to clinching the division last night as starter Max Scherzer was effective allowing two runs over six innings while striking out nine and the bats did just enough to protect the lead. Victor Martinez had three hits including his 32nd home run on a two run shot, Miguel Cabrera hit his 24th homer on a solo shot, and Rajai Davis had two hits and an RBI in the eight hit effort.
The Tigers will send Rick Porcello to the mound on Friday night as they look to capitalize on the weaker Twins. Porcello enters this game with a WHIP of 1.21 and ERA of 3.31 while posting a record of 15-12. The righty Porcello has been worse at home with a 4.19 ERA and has also been less effective against the Twins with a 4.05 ERA across three starts this year.
The Tigers are a heavy favorite but deservingly so as they should have no problem taking care of business against the Twins in this spot.
