The Kansas City Royals and Oakland Athletics square off in the AL Wild Card at Kauffman Stadium Tuesday.
The Kansas City Royals and the postseason have not been associated with one another for quite awhile (1985) but we saw improvement in this team over the past several years to believe this team would finally break through. Not only did KC break through the American League Central was in their grasp before the Tigers laid claim to that prize. The Royals had all the ingredients of a postseason contender with quality pitching and hitting although this could be a streaky squad. The Royals had a team ERA of 3.50 and a BA of .263 and could win games any number of ways but were a much stronger club on the road where they finished 13 games above .500. James Shields toes the rubber for the Royals in what will be his third meeting versus the Oakland Athletics. Shields has logged a 14-8 record in 34 outings.

The Oakland Athletics were the odds on favorite to capture the American League West and for much of the season looked to be the 900 pound gorilla. However the team slumped and generally didn't play well and most of their issues seemed to come about after making trades that brought Jeff Samardzija and Jason Hammel over from the Cubs. The A's sent the big bat of Yoenis Cespedes to the Red Sox and received Jon Lester in return which seems like a decent deal with the lefty producing from day one of the trade. However the Athletics began to lose their edge and it all coincided with the trades so the chemistry seemed to alter dramatically as Oakland went from division leader to a team that was scrambling to snag a Wild Card. Lefty Jon Lester gets the call to the mound to face Kansas City for the 4th time in 2014. Lester has had a strong season with a 16-11 record and 2.46 ERA over 32 starts.
This is an interesting match up with the Royals going 5-2 versus the A's and winning both of Shields starts but suffering both defeats to Lester. I'm going with Kansas City but more of an action bet with the better bats...
