The Line: Pittsburgh Pirates -105 / San Francisco Giants -105 --- Over/Under: 6 See the Latest Odds
The Pittsburgh Pirates and the San Francisco Giants face off on Wednesday at PNC Ballpark in the “winner take all” NL Wildcard game.
The Pittsburgh Pirates got hot after the All Star Break and while they came up short of catching the St. Louis Cardinals in the NL Central for the second year in a row they play in the Wildcard game, a game they won last year. The Pirates were 51-30 at home but finished the season by losing their last two games. The Pirates have at least the psychological edge in this one beating the Giants four out of the six times they played including in two of the three in Pittsburgh. As a team the Pirates are hitting .259 With Josh Harrison at .315 and Andrew McCutchen at .314. McCutchen also finished first on the Pirates with 25 home runs and 83 RBI while Neil Walker finished with 23 home runs. The Pirates pitching staff has an ERA of 3.49 with the starters at 3.60 and the bullpen at 3.28. For Wednesday’s game the Pirates start Edinson Volquez who has finally found his game after several years of being a player with a ton of potential that he never lived up to. Volquez was 2-0 with a 0.43 ERA in his last three starts and 13-7 with a 3.04 ERA for the season.
USA TODAY Sports
The San Francisco led the National League West for most of the first half of the season but a mid season slump allowed the Dodgers to pass them in the standings and while they kept it close to the end the Giants were never able to catch up. The Giants finished with an identical record as the Pirates but they were 43-38 on the road winning their final two games of the season. As a team the Giants are hitting .255 with Buster Posey hitting .311 with 22 home runs and 89 RBI’s, Pablo Sandoval hitting .279, and Hunter Pence hitting .277. For Wednesday game the Giants start Madison Bumgarner who went 18-10 with a 2.98 ERA this season and 1-1 with a 2.66 ERA in his last three starts. While the Giants didn’t make the post season last year they won the World Series two years back as well as four years ago so they are experienced at winning in October.
Pittsburgh is 6-1 against a left handed starter, 17-6 in their last 23 games, 39-18 in their last 57 home games, and 12-5 in Volquez’s last 17 starts. San Francisco is 5-0 against the NL Central, 6-10 as an underdog, 1-5 in their last six road games, and 6-1 in Bumgarner’s last seven starts. San Francisco is 2-6 in their last eight games in Pittsburgh.
The total in this one is set at 7 and I don’t see it getting close as both teams are ready to unload the bullpen if need be as there is no tomorrow for the loser so my free pick is the under. I also have a play on the winning side that I will post in the Premium Area as well as the App.
