The San Francisco Giants and Kansas City Royals butt heads in game five of the World Series at AT&T Park.

The Kansas City Royals might have let one get away in an 11-4 rout at the hands of San Francisco on Saturday that evened the World Series 2-2. The Royals held a 4-1 lead before their pitching collapsed with starter Jason Vargas allowing three runs on six hits and three BB with Brandon Finnegan giving up five more and Tim Collins two more. That was far too much firepower for the Royals attack to counter despite a very good 12 hit, two walk attack. Omar Infante swung the big bat with a two run single while Salvador Perez and Eric Hosmer recorded RBI's. Lorenzo Cain, Hosmer and Perez accounted for eight hits. Kansas City hands the ball to James Shields for the second time in the World Series versus the San Francisco Giants. Shields was hit hard in a 7-1 defeat in game one where he was charged with five runs on seven hits and a walk over three innings pitched.

It was clear heading in to game four that the San Francisco Giants needed to avoid falling behind and having to face the prospect of scoring runs against an airtight Royals bullpen. So much for that theory as the Giants fell behind and then crushed the vaunted Kansas City relief corps. It was the SF pen that was centerstage Saturday with starter Ryan Vogelsong getting knocked around for all four runs on seven hits and a base on balls before five relievers held the Royals off the scoreboard the rest of the way with the offense taking out the whooping stick. The Giants hammered out 16 hits and walked six times with Hunter Pence going 3-5 with three RBI's and two runs with Joe Panik driving in a pair and scoring twice. Pablo Sandoval drove in two more and Gregor Blanco scored three times as every starter scored or drove in runs. Left hander Madison Bumgarner gets the call to the hill to face the Kansas City Royals in a rematch of the World Series opener. Bumgarner was at his best in the game one win with a single run plated on three hits and a free pass over seven innings of a 7-1 decision.

Kansas City is 10-3 in their last 13 postseason games and are 9-4 in the past 13 interleague contests and are 39-20 in their past 59 road games. For San Francisco the over 8-1 in their last nine games on grass and is 8-1 in the past nine overall while the Giants are 8-1 in the last nine home World Series games. Head to head Kansas City is 7-3 in the last ten match up. If we look at this match up from what has happened in the postseason games then the numbers say Bumgarner and San Francisco have been a great combination while Shields has generally struggled and has needed his offense to bail him out. I have to look at Bumgarner here but to be honest I have not been very good in this series...
