The St. Louis Cardinals and Chicago Cubs play Sunday night in the 2015 season opener at Wrigley Field.
The St. Louis Cardinals look to begin the season on a positive note and make a run for a playoff spot for the fifth straight season. The Cardinals should have a much more consistent offense with a healthy Yadier Molina and the addition of Jason Heyward, who will be part of St. Louis’ plan to be more aggressive on the basepaths. Despite playing in an improved NL Central, the Cardinals begin the season as the favorite to win the division. The St. Louis Cardinals look to win their opening game for the third time in in the last five years. Adam Wainwright gets the nod, and he finished last season with a 20-9 record, 2.38 ERA and had 179 strikeouts. Wainwright is 11-7 with a 4.09 ERA and 164 strikeouts in his career against the Cubs.

The Chicago Cubs look to be a surprise team this season, as they haven’t made the playoffs since 2008. The positive vibes in Chicago start with new manager Joe Maddon, who is motivated to turn things around for this suffering franchise. While still a young roster, the Cubs have a few studs to carry them such as Anthony Rizzo, Starlin Castro and Kris Bryant, who should be back on the team soon after killing the spring. However, the Cubs must limit their strikeout totals if they hope to really make a big stride this season. The Chicago Cubs have won just opening day since the 2010 season. Jon Lester gets the ball, and he finished last season with a 16-11 record, 2.46 ERA and 220 strikeouts. This will be Lester’s second career game against the Cardinals.
The Cardinals are 4-0 in their last 4 during game 1 of a series and 54-26 in Wainwright's last 80 starts. The Cubs are 2-5 in their last 7 during game 1 of a series and 4-1 in their last 5 vs. National League Central. The Cardinals are 7-1 in Wainwright's last 8 starts vs. Cubs.
The Cubs fans always think positive heading into the new season, but this is one of those years they actually have a reason to think they're moving in the right direction. Wrigley Field should be hyped and the Cubs should really look to start this year off on the right foot. I'm on the bandwagon and think the Cubs get the 2015 season off with a victory.
