The Oakland A’s and the Texas Rangers face off on Monday Night as they open their 2015 Major League Baseball schedules.
The Oakland A’s are coming off of another year of making the post season but it was as a wildcard as they let a big lead evaporate in the AL West. After making many roster moves at the end of last season, little remains from the Athletics teams we have watched in recent years as far as personnel. Coco Crisp and Josh Reddick start the season on the DL and Josh Donaldson is gone. Billy Butler comes over from Kansas City to assume the DH role, Ben Zobrist could end up playing several positions, Ike Davis takes over at first base and Brett Lawrie is on third. Sonny Gray gets the start for Oakland as Jon Lester and Jeff Samardzijia are both gone and Gray was 14-10 with a 3.08 ERA last season striking out 183 over 219 innings.

After many successful seasons and trips to the World Series, the Rangers took a step back last season. For years the Rangers were raided of top tier free agents and number one starting pitchers and then their big free agent pickup, Price Fielder missed most of the season. Fielder is back and he should lead the Rangers offense. Elvis Andrus and Adrian Beltre are familiar faces and Shin Soo-Choo was another big free agent pickup last season. The Rangers had a slew of injuries last year and they start the season with plenty as well including Yu Darvish who had Tommy John surgery. Yovanni Gallardo comes over from the Brewers and he gets the opening day start while Neftali Feliz is the closer.
Oakland is 3-7 in their last 10 against the AL West, 21-10 against a right-handed starter, 4-10 in their last 14 home games, and 1-5 in Gray’s last six home starts. Texas is 5-1 in their last six road games, 13-3 in their last 16 games, 10-3 as an underdog, and 19-42 against a right-handed starter. Texas is 7-2 in their last nine games in Oakland.
Baseball is all about value as even the best teams lose 65-70 times a season and I don’t see the A’s as being one of the better team this year and while I don’t like the Rangers much either, they are the better option here.
