The Los Angeles Dodgers begin defense of their NL West crown when they host the San Diego Padres on opening day.
The San Diego Padres were a non factor in the National League West a season ago at 17 games out of first. The Padres were very strong on the mound but struggled to hit the ball and score runs which seems to be problem number one for this team every year. New GM AJ Preller has made some moves to upgrade the offense with the additions of Wil Myers, Justin Upton, Matt Kemp and Derek Norris so we shall see if the scoring can improve for a team that mustered 535 runs a year ago. The addition of James Shields combining with Andrew Cashner gives SD a nice one, two punch on the mound although it remains to be seen if the arms get enough support to win. The call to the mound on Monday goes to James Shields who was 14-8 with a 3.21 ERA with Kansas City a year ago.

The Los Angeles Dodgers won their second consecutive National League West title in 2014 but have no World Series win so can the Dodgers change that with their offseason moves? Matt Kemp and Hanley Ramirez are gone but the addition of Jimmy Rollins gives the offense a competent leadoff man with a bit of pop while Yasiel Puig and Adrian Gonzalez steal the headlines for a very capable lineup backed by a versatile bench. Clayton Kershaw is the best hurler in the game and along with Zach Greinke and Hyun-Jin Ryu the Dodgers are fantastic at the top of the rotation. However with Brandon McCarthy and Brett Anderson as the #4 and #5 injuries and performance from these two spots is and will continue to be a concern. Defending Cy Young award winner Clayton Kershaw gets the nod Monday after a 21-3 year with a 1.77 ERA.
For San Diego Under is 8-3 in SD last 11 Monday games with the Padres going 7-3 in their last 10 Monday games and 17-37 in their last 54 road games. For Los Angeles the over is 19-6-2 in their last 27 overall and is 19-6-2 in their last 27 on grass while going 21-8-2 in the Dodgers last 31 games as a favorite. Head to head the under is 20-7 in the last 27 meetings while San Diego are 8-19 in the last 27 meetings.
I have to go with the best pitcher in the game here regardless of who he faces on opening day…
