The Toronto Blue Jays and New York Yankees will face off in the 2nd game of their series this Wednesday night at Yankee Stadium.
The Toronto Blue Jays were able to get out to an early lead by scoring 5 runs in the third off Masahiro Tanaka and held on to defeat the New York Yankees, 6-1, this past Monday. The Blue Jays were able to capitalize on an error by the Yankees Chase Headley and capped off their 5-run third inning with a 2 run Home Run by Edwin Encarnacion. The Bottom of the Blue Jays line-up had a great day as Kevin Pillar went 2 for 4 with a run scored and Devon Travis went 1 for 2 with 2 BB, 1 RBI, and 1 run. Drew Hutchison earned the opening day start for Toronto and his only real blemish came in the 6th inning when he allowed a solo home run to Brett Gardner. Hutchison finished his day going 6.0 innings while giving up 3 hits, 2 walks, while striking out 3. Toronto’s bullpen was solid as Aaron Loup and Miguel Castro went a combined 3.0 innings allowing no hits and just one walk.

The New York Yankees opened their season without Derek Jeter for the first time and the results were less than par on opening day as their “ace” pitcher seemed to struggle as his velocity still seems to be a bit down and the offensive was only able to muster 3 hits in the loss. Leading the way for the Yankees was Brett Gardner who went 1 for 4 with a solo homerun and Alex Rodriguez who was 1 for 2 with a walk. The heart of the Yankees line-up struggled as Carlos Beltran, Mark Teixeira, and Brian McCann went a combined 1-10 with 2 walks. Masahiro Tanaka only lasted 4 innings while giving up 5 hits, 5 runs (4 ER), 2 BB, while striking out 6. The Yankees bullpen, which should be one of the strong aspects of this Yankees team, was solid as 5 different pitchers went a combined 5.0 innings while only allowing 1 hit, 1 run, on 3 walks.
The Blue Jays are 4-0 in their last 4 when their opponent allows 5 runs or more in their previous game and 5-1 in their last 6 Wednesday games. The Yankees are 10-1 in their last 11 after allowing 5 runs or more in their previous game and 5-2 in their last 7 games as a home favorite of -110 to -150.
The Blue Jays will send the veteran knuckleballer, R.A. Dickey to the mound who went 14-13 with a 3.71 ERA while having a 7.2 K/9. The Yankees sent Michael Pineda who had an interesting 2014 season filled with a few great outings, however, will be best remembered for the pine tar incident early in the season. R.A. Dickey pitched well last year against the Yankees and although I do like Pineda as he is a pitcher that likes to pound the zone and has a great slider, I think the Blue Jays will get a good outing out of Dickey and put up enough against Pineda to get the win here. I’m taking Toronto.
