The New York Yankees host the Boston Red Sox for the first time in the young season.

The Boston Red Sox travel to the Big Apple riding the momentum of Thursday’s 6-2 victory at Philadelphia. A six run third was all the Red Sox needed with their pitching easily handling the Phillies offense. Starter Justin Masterson gave up both runs on three hits and a pair of free passes while striking out seven through six innings pitched with a trio of relievers tossing a scoreless frame each. The offense pounded out eleven hits and walked six times with Xander Bogaerts swinging the big bat with a 3-4 night that included a three run triple and a run while Shane Victorino and Ryan Hanigan recorded RBI’s and scored. Newcomer Wade Miley makes his first start for the Red Sox since coming over from Arizona. Miley had 33 starts for the Diamondbacks in 2014 with an 8-12 record and 4.34 ERA.

USA TODAY Sports

The New York Yankees head in to the series opener with Boston on the heels of a 6-3 defeat at the hands of visiting Toronto who had struggled to win versus CC Sabathia in the past. However it was Sabathia who did the struggling Thursday with five runs plated (four earned) on eight hits over 5.2 frames while whiffing eight. The offense had some base runners on seven hits and four bases on balls with Alex Rodriguez and Mark Texiera smacked their first long balls of 2015 while Didi Gregorious singled in JR Murphy. Nathan Eovaldi makes his first start for the Yankees after coming over from the Marlins over the winter. Eovaldi made 33 starts for the Marlins with a 6-14 record and a 4.37 ERA.

The Red Sox are 3-7 in their last 10 games as a road favorite and  2-5 in their last 7 games as a road favorite of -110 to -150. Boston  are 2-5 in their last 7 road games versus a right-handed starter and  2-5 in their last 7 games vs. a team with a winning % below .400. The Yankees are 6-1 in their last 7 home games versus a left-handed starter and  9-3 in their last 12 games versus a starter with a WHIP less than 1.15. New York are 8-3 in their last 11 games versus a left-handed starter and  7-19 in their last 26 games as a home underdog. I don’t think the pitching is decisive but I prefer the Boston bats…
