The Seattle Mariners and the Oakland Athletics open an AL West series on Friday night.
The Seattle Mariners were outscored 8-7 in their three game series with the Angels which resulted in a 1-2 record. Neither the arms or bats were at their best in Wednesday’s 5-3 defeat in which the Angels scored four times in the first and held the M’s at bay the rest of the way. Hisashi Iwakuma didn’t have his best stuff with five runs scored (four earned) on nine hits over six innings pitched. The bats totaled nine hits and walked once with Kyle Seager cracking a two run homer while Brad Miller launched a solo bomb. The Seattle Mariners give the series opening start with the Athletics to Taijuan Walker. Walker appeared in eight games in 2014 including five starts where he went 2-3 with a 2.61 ERA.

The Oakland Athletics saw their chance at winning their season opening series versus visiting Texas go by the wayside in Thursday’s 10-1 defeat. This was a series that was either good or bad for the Athletics and it was obviously the latter in the finale’ as the Rangers took a 3-0 lead in the first and were up 8-0 by the 4th. Starter Kedall Graveman was hit hard eight runs (seven earned) on seven hits over 3.1 frames with a pair of long balls served up with Evan Scribner and RJ Alvarez allowing a homerun apiece. The offense couldn’t touch Nicholas Martinez with six hits and a trio of free passes resulting in and RBI double off the bat of Marcus Semien. Left hander Drew Pomeranz draws Friday’s series opening start versus the Mariners. Pomeranz appeared in 20 games a season ago with ten starts where he was 5-4 with a 2.35 ERA.
The Mariners are 4-0 in their last 4 games with the total set at 6.5 or lower and 4-0 in their last 4 vs. a team with a winning record. Seattle are 4-0 in their last 4 Friday games and are 6-1 in their last 7 games following an off day. The Athletics are 81-37 in their last 118 games as a home favorite of -110 to -150 and 5-16 in their last 21 home games with the total set at 6.5 or lower. Oakland are 2-8 in their last 10 games with the total set at 6.5 or lower and 1-7 in their last 8 games vs. a starter with a WHIP less than 1.15. This looks like a tight one so I’ll take a chance with the better bats or so I think…
