The Oakland Athletics and Houston Astros will battle at Minute Maid Park in the first game of their series this Monday night.
The Oakland Athletics (3-4) dropped their 2nd straight game after being defeated by the Seattle Mariners, 8-7, this past Sunday afternoon. Tyler Clippard gave up a solo home run to Nelson Cruz in the top of 10th and took the loss. Oakland was able to jump out to a 3-0 lead against one of the best pitchers in baseball in Felix Hernandez, however gave up a combined 7 runs in the 6th and 7th innings in the loss. Oakland’s starter, Jesse Hahn, gave up 4 runs (1 ER) on 3 hits and 2 walks while Eric O’Flaherty struggled in relief giving up three runs on three hits in just 1 inning pitched. Offensively, Oakland was led by Sam Fuld (2-4, 1BB, 1 R, 2 RBI’s) and Billy Butler (3-4, 1 BB). Oakland left 8 runners on base and went 7-17 with RISP.

The Houston Astros (3-3) defeated the Texas Rangers 6-4 in 14 innings, to win their first series of the season against their in-state rivals. George Springer made one of the better defensive plays of the season robbing a Texas homerun in the 10th inning and Hank Conger hit a two-run homerun in the 14th inning that put the Astros up for good. Leading the way for Houston was Colby Rasmus (2-6, 1 R) and Jake Marisnick (2-5, 1 R, 2 RBI’s). Houston left 5 runners on base and went 2 for 5 with RISP. Dallas Keuchel (1-0, 1.29 ERA) pitched well for Astros as he went 7 innings giving up just 2 runs on 6 hits and 3 walks while striking out 3. Will Harris picked up the win for Houston pitching 2 innings of no-hit ball while striking out 3. Samuel Deduno made it interesting in the bottom of the 14th as he allowed the Rangers to get runners on 2nd and 3rd with two outs, however, was able to get Rougned Odor to line out to right for the save.
The Athletics are 5-11 in their last 16 vs. a team with a losing record and 7-17 in their last 24 road games. The Astros are 4-10 in their last 14 games as an underdog and 2-6 in their last 8 games as a home underdog.
Scott Kazmir (1-0, 0.00 ERA) will get the start for Oakland in this match and is coming off a masterful performance against the Texas Rangers as went 7 innings, giving up no runs on just 1 hit and 2 walks while striking out 10. Houston will send Scott Feldman (0-1, 1.35 ERA) to the mound who pitched well in his first match-up of the season against Cleveland going 6.2 innings giving up 1 runs on 5 hits and no walks.
Scott Kazmir started of 2014 as one of the best pitchers in the American League, and although he did struggle in the 2nd half last year, I think he will once again start off strong this season. Houston does have the offensive talent to put some runs up on the board, however, I think Kazmir will be able to keep the Astros off-balance in this one and picks up the win for the Athletics. Take Oakland.
