The Detroit Tigers and Pittsburgh Pirates begin a three-game series Monday afternoon.
The Detroit Tigers have yet to lose and are coming off a sweep of the Cleveland Indians. The Tigers are getting it done with their offense, as they’ve scored a combined 43 runs in their last five games. Miguel Cabrera leads the charge with 13 hits and eight RBI while Ian Kinsler and Jose Iglesias are the two other Detroit players with double-digit hits already. Pitching wise, the Tigers have allowed 15 runs in their last three games, but that hasn’t mattered much with their offense stepping up. There’s no doubt that the Detroit Tigers look like a scary baseball team out of the gate. Anibal Sanchez gets the nod, and he’s 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA and six strikeouts this season. Sanchez is 2-4 with a 3.16 ERA and 46 strikeouts in his career against the Pirates.

The Pittsburgh Pirates have split their last four games and are coming off a series win over the Brewers. The Pirates offense has also exploded as of late, producing a combined 16 runs in their last three games. Pedro Alvarez leads Pittsburgh with four RBI while Neil Walker and Francisco Cervelli have combined for 10 hits. Pitching wise the Pirates have won seven of their last eight when allowing three or less runs. The Pittsburgh Pirates are a very dangerous team when their offense matches their pitching staff, and they’ve shown that in their last few games. Gerrit Cole takes the hill, and he’s 0-0 with a 5.40 ERA and six strikeouts this season. This will be Cole’s first career game against the Tigers.
The Tigers are 7-2 in their last 9 during game 1 of a series and 4-1 in Sanchezs last 5 starts. The Pirates are 8-2 in their last 10 during game 1 of a series and 11-4 in Coles last 15 starts. The Tigers are 0-4 in the last 4 meetings in Pittsburgh.
It's hard to bet against the Tigers not only with Sanchez on the mound, but with the way they're crushing the ball. I'll gladly take the plus money in this spot.
