The Cincinnati Reds and Chicago Cubs continue weekday series at Wrigley Field on Tuesday.
The Cincinnati Reds are out to prove their performance in 2014 was a fluke and a nice start to the season has to be a confidence builder. However a 7-6 loss at Chicago in ten innings was one that got away with 3-0 and 6-3 leads going for naught. Starter Mike Leake gave up four runs over seven frames on seven hits including a pair of homers while Jose Rafael Diaz blew the save with two runs plated with Manny Parra losing it in the 10th. The Reds pounded out 13 hits with Marlon Byrd and Jay Bruce both going 2-5 with a pair of runs knocked in. Anthony DeScalifani makes his second start of 2015 when he faces the division rival Cubs Tuesday. DeScalifani did not receive a decision in a 3-2 victory over Pittsburgh where he allowed both runs on five hits in six frames.

The Chicago Cubs have some new faces and only time will tell if they can finally emerge as a threat in the National League Central. I don’t think they are ready to take that step but we shall see after two consecutive wins built on late rallies. The Cubs came back from a pair of three run deficits to edge visiting Cincinnati 7-6 in ten innings. Jon Lester struggled once again with all six runs given up on ten hits through six innings before the pen saved the day with four relievers putting up zeros. The Cubbie rode a ten hit, five walk attack that saw Jorge Soler launch a pair of bombs to drive in four and score three times. Chris Coghlan delivered a solo jack with Soler scoring the winner in extras on Arismendy Alcantara’s base hit. The Cubbies turn to right hander Jake Arrieta on the bump to match up with the dangerous Reds. Arrieta was at the top of his game in his first outing with a three hitter over seven innings of a 2-0 loss versus St Louis.
Cincinnati are 8-29 in their last 37 road games and 6-2 in their last 8 games overall while going 6-2 in their last 8 games on grass. The Cubs are 9-1 in their last 10 Tuesday games and 7-3 in their last 10 overall while going 7-3 in their last 10 games on grass. Head to head the Reds are 20-7 in the last 27 meetings in Chicago and 40-17 in the last 57 meetings overall. The Cubs as favorites is something I seldom bet because they haven’t proven themselves yet…
