The Seattle Mariners and the Texas Rangers face off on Saturday as they continue their MLB series of AL West teams.
The Seattle Mariners were one of the favorites to win the AL West but they are now at 3-7 and in last place after losing to the Rangers on Friday. Nelson Cruz had three hits and Austin Jackson and Robinson Cano each had hits but the Mariners scored just one run on eight hits. Starting pitcher J.A. Happ allowed five hits and two runs while striking out three over 7.0 innings to take the loss. For Saturday’s game the Mariners start Felix Hernandez who has allowed 10 hits and four runs while striking gout 11 over 12.0 innings for a 1-0 record and a 3.00 ERA.

The Texas Rangers moved to a game under .500 and that earned them second place in the AL West, just a half of a game off of the pace. Robinson Chirinos had two hits including a home run, Price Fielder had two hits, and Elvis Andrus had a hit as the Rangers scored three runs on seven hits. Starting pitcher Yovani Gallardo allowed six hits and struck out three over 6.0 innings to get the win and go to 2-1 for the season and Naftali Feliz earned his second save. For Saturday’s game the Rangers start Colby Lewis who has allowed 10 hits and five runs while striking out nine over 13.1 innings for a 1-0 record and a 3.38 ERA.
Seattle is 2-7 in their last nine games, 1-6 against a team with a winning record, and 21-8 in Hernandez’s last 29 starts. Texas is 4-1 in game two of a series, 8-3 in their last 11 road games, and 2-5 in Lewis’ last seven starts against a team with a losing record. Seattle is 0-5 in Hernandez’s last five starts against Texas.
The Mariners have been one of the biggest disappointments in the early going but as important as an early season game can be, this would be it and I expect the M’s to respond.
