The Philadelphia Phillies battle the St Louis Cardinals take the field at Busch Stadium Tuesday.

The goal for the Philadelphia Phillies is to avoid the National League East basement which might be a lot to ask with injuries and trades leaving the club in need of many pieces. However the Phillies rose to the occasion in picking up a 4-1 road win against the Cardinals on Monday night. Lefty Cole Hamels was dominant with the lone run allowed on four hits and four free passes while striking out nine over seven frames to get his first win. The offense produced eleven hits with Ben Revere doubling in two and scoring while Carlos Ruiz went 4-4 with two runs scored. The Philadelphia Phillies call up Severino Gonzalez from the minors to face the red hot Cardinals Tuesday. The rookie is one of the top prospects in the organization and will get an opportunity to make the rotation.

USA TODAY Sports

The St Louis Cardinals seem to always be in the National League Central  race and this season isn’t any different. Having said that even the best teams lose games to teams they are better then at that happened in the series opener to visiting Philadelphia. Starter John Lackey threw the ball well enough to win with three runs scored on nine hits and a walk through seven innings to fall to 1-1. The Cardinals offense was quiet with five hits and four walks with 13 strikeouts hurting them. Matt Holliday singled in Matt Carpenter with their only run which was enough until a three run 7th by the Phils. Michael Wacha toes the rubber against visiting Philadelphia looking for win number four. Wacha has given up a run in each of his three outings on 15 hits and four walks over 20.1 innings pitched.

Philadelphia  are 1-7 in their last 8 road games and  are 4-10 in their last 14 overall while the Phillies  are 4-10 in their last 14 games on grass. St Louis are 9-2 in their last 11 overall and  are 9-2 in their last 11 games on grass while the Cardinals are 38-15 in their last 53 home games. The Phillies are 2-6 in their last 8 meetings in St Louis while the under is 5-2-1 in the last 8 meetings. I have no clue what we’ll see from Gonzalez so for that alone I’ll go with the home team…
