The Kansas City Royals battle the Detroit Tigers in the rubber game of their series on Sunday Night Baseball.
The Kansas City Royals are locked in a battle with Detroit for the top spot in the AL Central with both teams trading punches. The Royals connected on their’s Saturday with a 6-2 victory behind some early scoring and strong pitching. Starter Jeremy Guthrie allowed both runs on eight hits and a walk over 7.1 frames to even his record at 2-2. The bats pounded out 13 hits and walked three times with Alcides Escobar going deep with two RBI’s and two runs with Eric Hosmer going 2-5 with a pair of runs driven in. Chris Young makes his second start of the season with both coming against the Tigers. The veteran defeated Detroit 4-1 with a no hit shutout with three walks and nine strikeouts in five frames.

The Detroit Tigers have a great offense and some quality pitching which makes them a threat each and every time they take the field. However neither put up much of a fight in Saturday’s defeat to visiting Kansas City. Starter Anibal Sanchez gave up six runs (five earned) on nine hits and a trio of bases on balls through six innings to fall to 2-4 on the season. The Tigers posted nine hits and walked once with Nick Castellanos driving in both runs with Victor Martinez and Yoenis Cespedes both going 2-4 and scoring. The Tigers send Shane Greene to the bump hoping he has ironed out his recent struggles. Greene has given up a combined 20 runs on 23 hits and six BB over eleven innings pitched.
Kansas City are 36-17 in their last 53 overall and are 36-17 in their last 53 on grass while the Royals are 9-19 in their last 28 meetings in Detroit. I don’t have complete faith in Young but he seems to have an edge on the mound and hopefully that proves true…
