The Seattle Mariners and the Boston Red Sox face off on Friday for game two of their MLB series at Safeco Field.
The Seattle Mariners battled for nine innings on Thursday but in the end they came up short losing to the Red Sox. Nelson Cruz had three hits, Kyle Seager had two hits, and Robinson Cano had a hit as the Mariners scored one run on seven hits. Starting pitcher Roenis Elias allowed eight hits and a run while striking out two over 6.1 innings to not get a decision as Fernando Rodney took the loss to fall to 1-2 for the season. For Friday’s game the Mariners start J.A. Happ who has allowed 37 hits and 14 earned runs while striking out 32 over 38.1 innings for a 3-1 record and a 3.29 ERA.

The Boston Red Sox got the winning run across the plate in the ninth inning as thy beat the Mariners on Thursday. Shane Victorino hit a home run, Hanley Ramirez had four hits, and Brock Holt had two hits as the Red Sox scored two runs on 10 hits. Starting pitcher Joe Kelly allowed five hits and a run while striking out two over 6.1 innings for a no decision as Matt Barnes got the win and Koji Uehara earned his eighth save. For Friday’s game the Red Sox start Clay Buchholz who has allowed 47 hits and 24 earned runs while striking out 43 over 37.2 innings for a 2-4 record and a 5.73 ERA.
Seattle is 7-3 against a team with a losing record, 7-4 against the AL East, and 3-9 as an underdog. Boston is 3-9 against the AL West, 6-15 against a left-handed starter, and 1-5 in Buchholz’s last six starts. Boston is 2-5 in the last seven meetings of these two.
