The San Diego Padres and the Washington Nationals face off on Friday at Petco Park for game two of their MLB series.
The San Diego Padres jumped all over the Nationals early on Thursday and made it hold up as they coasted to the win. Cory Spangenberg hit two home runs, Derek Norris hit a home run, and Matt Kemp was among those with two hits as the Padres scored eight runs on 13 hits. Starting pitcher Tyson Ross allowed five hits and two runs while striking out six over 5.0 innings to get the win and go to 2-3 for the season. For Friday’s game the Padres start Ordisamer Despaigne who has allowed 22 hits and 15 earned runs while striking out 11 over 26.1 innings for a 2-1 record and a 5.13 ERA.

The Washington Nationals were never in the game on Thursday as they were pounded by the Padres. Denard Span and Jayson Werth each had two hits and Ryan Zimmerman had a hit as the Nationals scored three runs on eight hits. Starting pitcher Doug Fister allowed eight hits and seven runs while striking out one and lasting just 2.0 innings to take the loss and fall to 2-2 for the season. For Friday’s game the Nationals start Jordan Zimmerman who has allowed 46 hits and 19 earned runs while striking out 24 over 40.2 innings for a 2-2 record and a 4.20 ERA.
San Diego is 7-1 against the NL East, 23-10 in game two of a series, and 5-0 in Despaigne’s last five home starts. Washington is 12-4 in their last 16 games, 6-1 as a road favorite, and 61-27 in Zimmerman’s last 88 starts.
I look for the Padres to ride Thursday’s momentum and get the win once again here.
