The Oakland Athletics conclude their series at Minute Maid Park with the Houston Astros.
The Oakland Athletics need a shift in momentum and the sooner the better to stay competitive in the American League West. The Oakland Athletics seemed to have the advantage Tuesday with ace Sonny Gray on the mound but in the end an average outing wasn’t good enough in a 6-4 defeat at Houston. Gray fell to 4-1 with three runs plated on seven hits and three BB over five frames before Fernando Rodriguez and Fernando Abad gave up three runs to put the game out of reach. The A’s posted ten hits and walked four times with Maxwell Muncy going 2-4 with a homer and two runs. Jesse Hahn gets the call to the mound in the final game of the series at Minute Maid Park. Hahn was let down by his defense in a 7-6 loss to the White Sox where he allowed four runs (two earned) on five hits in 6.1 frames.

The Houston Astros continue to cling to the lead in the American League West and haven’t been in this position for quite awhile. The Astros are not supposed to be leading the division but they continued to win with another strong night at the plate and on the mound. Starter Roberto Hernandez allowed two runs on seven hits and a pair of free passes through six frames with Luke Gregerson giving up a pair of 9th inning runs. The Stros racked up eleven hits and four walks with Colby Rasmus and Chris Carter going deep and knocking in two while Jason Castro went solo as all but one starter reached base. Dallas Keuchel is scheduled to take the ball against visiting Oakland on Wednesday afternoon. Keuchel has not been at his best the past two times out with a combined eight runs allowed on 16 hits and five BB in 12.2 innings.
Oakland are 3-12 in their last 15 Wednesday games and are 7-26 in their last 33 games as an underdog while the over is 6-2-1 in their last 9 games as an underdog. The under is 7-2-1 in Houston’s last 10 Wednesday games while the Astro’s are 21-8 in their last 29 overall and 21-8 in their last 29 games on grass. The over is 18-8 in the last 26 meetings in Houston. I don’t know if it’s wise to go against Houston now even though Keuchel has looked ordinary…
