The New York Mets look to make a run at first in the NL East with a win at the Pittsburgh Pirates.
The New York Mets are looking to climb back in to the top spot in the National League East. The New Yorkers went the opposite way Friday in a 4-1 defeat at Pittsburgh where the defense and hitting let the team down. Noah Snydergaard gave up four runs (three earned) on seven hits over six frames to fall to 1-2. The offense stalled on six hits and a base on balls with Curtis Granderson knocking in Juan Lagares with the lone run. Ace Matt Harvey shoots for his third consecutive shutout when he opposes the Pirates Saturday. Harvey did not allow a run against the Cubs or Cardinals in 15 innings pitched where he struck out 18.

The Pittsburgh Pirates are still waiting to hit their stride and make a move in the National League Central. The Pirates had dropped six of seven heading in to Friday’s contest so Friday’s win was a welcome sight. Starter Gerrit Cole was outstanding with an unearned run plated on six hits while striking out ten through 8.1 frames to up his record to 6-2. The Buccos did their damage on seven hits where four players knocked in runs with four scoring with Pitt scoring twice in the 2nd and twice in the 6th. AJ Burnett looks to keep his torrid work on the mound going when he gets the ball against Pittsburgh. Burnett has won three in a row after defeating the Cubs 3-0 with seven scoreless frames.
The Mets are 3-13 in their last 16 games as an underdog and the under is 12-5-2 in their last 19 overall while going 12-5-2 in New York’s last 19 on grass. The over is 9-4-2 in Pittsburgh’s last 15 home games and the under is 23-8-1 in Burnett’s last 32 home starts while going 8-3-1 in Burnett’s last 12 on grass. The Mets are 4-9 in the last 13 meetings. When the Mets need a win I wouldn’t want anybody else but Harvey on the mound…
