The Seattle Mariners and the New York Yankees face off on Wednesday at Safeco Field for game three of their MLB series.

The Seattle Mariners continued to move backwards in the AL West standings as they lost to the Yankees for the second night in a row. Austin Jackson had four hits and  Robinson Cano and  Kyle Seagar each had two hits as the Mariners scored three runs on 14 hits. Starting pitcher Mike Montgomery allowed four hits and a run while striking out four over 6.0 innings in his Major League debut to not get a decision as Todd Wilhelmsen took the loss. For Wednesday’s game the Mariners start Taijuan Walker who has allowed 58 hits and 35 earned runs while striking out 47 over 51 innings for a 2-5 record and a 6.18 ERA.

USA TODAY Sports

The New York Yankees needed extra innings to get it done but they beat the Mariners on Tuesday for the second night in row. Garrett Jones hit a home run and Brett Gardener and Didi Gregorius each had two hits as the Yankees scored five runs on 14 hits. Starting pitcher C.C. Sabathia allowed nine hits and two runs while striking out six over 5.2 innings to not get a decision as Justin Wilson got the win to go to 2-0 and Andrew Miller earned his 16th save. For Wednesday’s game the Yankees start Masahiro Tanaka who makes his first start since going on the DL on April 23rd.

Seattle is 1-4 in game three of a series, 0-5 in their last five games, and 0-6 in Walker’s last six starts in game three of a series. New York is 5-10 in their last 15 road games, 2-5 in game three of a series, and 16-6 in Tanaka’s last 22 starts. New York has won their last six meetings with Seattle.

The Yankees clearly have the Mariners number right now and even though the last time we saw Tanaka he wasn’t as effective as he was last year I expect him and the Yankees to be good enough here.
