The Washington Nationals host the Chicago Cubs in the final game of their series on Sunday afternoon.
The Chicago Cubs were the only challenger to St Louis in the National League Central but not any longer with Pittsburgh climbing back in to the picture. The Cubs evened their series at Washington Saturday behind solid work on the mound from Jason Hammel. Hammel served up a pair of solo homers over eight frames to up his record to 5-2. The Cubs mounted a seven hit, two walk attack that saw Dexter Fowler and Anthony Rizzo go 2-4 with RBI’s. Kyle Hendricks gets the ball Sunday for his second meeting of the season with the Nationals. Hendricks defeated Washington 3-2 with a solo homer served up on four hits and two BB over seven frames.
USA TODAY Sports
The Washington Nationals are clinging to first in the National League East as they have not been playing well. The Nationals fell for the 8th time in eleven contests after Saturday’s defeat with neither the offense or pitching came up big. Starter Joe Ross allowed three runs on six hits through five innings to take the loss. The Nationals totaled just five hits and walked three times with Bryce Harper going 2-4 with a long ball while Wilson Ramos also connected on a solo bomb but the bats were dead silent otherwise. Jordan Zimmermann ends the series on the mound against the visiting Cubs. Zimmermann is coming off of a 2-0 win versus Toronto with a six hit shutout over eight innings pitched.
The under is 8-3 in Cubs last 11 overall and is 8-3 in their last 11 on grass while Chicago are 14-6 in Hendricks' last 20 starts. Washington are 21-6 in their last 27 Sunday games and are 2-6 in their last 8 overall while going 2-6 in their last 8 games on grass. The over is 8-3 in the last 11 meetings in Washington. With all the talent the Nationals have I find it surprising they haven’t won more games. They should win Sunday but if they do it will be by the skin of their teeth…
