The Minnesota Twins and the Kansas City Royals face off on Wednesday at Target Field in their MLB series of AL central teams.
The Minnesota Twins couldn’t get any offense at all on Tuesday as they were blanked by the Royals. Trevor Plouffe got the Royals lone hit and Joe Mauer and Brian Dozier each had walks as the Twins didn’t score a run and had five total base runners. Starting pitcher Trevor May allowed seven hits and a run while striking out five over 6.0 innings to take the loss and fall to 4-4 for the season. For Wednesday’s game the Twins start Kyle Gibson who has allowed 65 hits and 23 earned runs while striking out 39 over 69 innings for a 4-3 record and a 3.00 ERA.

The Kansas City Royals took a full game lead in the AL Central standings as they beat the Twins on Tuesday. Salvador Perez had two hits including a home run and Lorenzo Cain and Mike Moustakas had hits as the Royals scored nine runs on two hits. Starting pitcher Chris Young allowed one hit and struck out two over 6.1 innings to get the win and go to 5-2 for the season and Greg Holland earned his 11th save. For Wednesday’s game the Royals start Edison Volquez who has allowed 51 hits and 24 earned runs while striking out 54 over 66.1 innings for a 4-4 record and a 3.26 ERA.
Minnesota is 5-0 in game three of a series, 15-7 in their last 22 home games, and 6-2 in Gibson’s last eight home starts. Kansas City is 5-9 in their last 14 games, 2-6 in Wednesday games, and 5-1 in Volquez’s last six starts. Kansas City is 12-5 in the last 17 meetings of these two.
This looks like a tight one but I expect the Twins bats to wake up and I give them a slight edge at best here.
