The Seattle Mariners and the Houston Astros face off on Sunday at Safeco Field as they close out their MLB series of American League West teams.
The Seattle Mariners made some advancement in the AL West on Saturday knocking off the first place Astros for the second game in a row. Seth Smith, Nelson Cruz, and Mark Trumbo each hit home runs as the Mariners scored six runs on seven hits. Starting pitcher Taijuan Walker allowed five hits and three runs while striking out 11 over 6.1 innings to get the win and got to 5-6 for the season and Carson Smith earned his fifth save. For Sunday’s game the Mariners start J.A. Happ who has allowed 80 hits and 31 earned runs while striking out 57 over 73.2 innings for a 3-3 record and a 3.79 ERA.

The Houston Astros lost for the second night in a row on Saturday as their lead in the AL West sits at 2.5 games. Evan Gattis and Luis Valbuena each hit home runs and Carlos Correa had a hit as the Astros scored three runs on eight hits. Starting pitcher Dallas Keuchel allowed five hits and five runs while striking out seven over 6.0 innings to take the loss and fall to 8-2 for the season. For Sunday’s game the Astros start Vincent Velasquez who has allowed 10 hits and five runs while striking out 12 over 9.2 innings for a 0-0 record and a 4.66 ERA.
Seattle is 4-9 in their last 13 home games, 2-10 as a favorite, and 0-4 in Happ’s last four starts. Houston is 5-2 in their last seven games, 2-7 against a left-handed starter, and 1-5 as a road underdog. Houston is 10-4 in their last 14 games against Seattle.
Velasquez has a strong arm but last game he was hit hard but I expect him to be solid here but not good enough as the Mariners get the sweep.
