The Baltimore Orioles travel to the Motor City to open the second half of 2015 with the Detroit Tigers.
The bad news for the Baltimore Orioles are they are just third in the American League East at 44-44. The good news is they are right in the thick of things with no other team storming away with the division. The Orioles were picked by many to capture the East for a second straight year but the team hasn’t been nearly as consistent and it looks like the offense has to shoulder much of the burden as the scoring can disappear without warning and this is the type of rotation that generally needs some support to succeed especially when Chris Tillman or Bud Norris are on the hill. The Orioles are slated to send Ubaldo Jimenez to the bump to face the Tigers Friday night for the first time this season. Jimenez has been outstanding with a 7-4 record and a team best 2.84 ERA.

The Detroit Tigers were rulers of the American League Central until the Kansas City Royals burst on to the scene last season. The division belongs to the Royals thus far at the halfway point but once again but Minnesota has taken over second leaving the Tigers third with an ordinary .500 record. The Tigers are hitting .278 as a team overall and despite slugger Miguel Cabrera being on the disabled list with a strained calf, scoring hasn’t been an issue. Unfortunately it hasn’t been an issue for opponents either which points the finger directly at the pitching which seems to always be in the conversation when Detroit is the subject. The Tigers go with Anibal Sanchez on the mound in the series opener versus the visiting Orioles. Sanchez is 8-7 with a 4.63 ERA which is much higher because of the 19 long balls he has surrendered.
Baltimore are 6-2 in their last 8 Friday games and the under is 10-4-2 in their last 16 overall while going 10-4-2 in the Orioles last 16 on grass. The over is 9-0 in Detroit’s last 9 home games and is 8-1 in their last 9 games as a favorite while going 23-4 in the Tigers last 27 overall. Both teams have been disappointing but I think Baltimore is more disappointing and I’ll back them as dogs…
