The Detroit Tigers open a series with the Seattle Mariners at Comerica Park on Monday.
The Seattle Mariners need to both get hot and hope for some help to make a run at the American League West lead. The Mariners offense stalled and even Felix Hernandez couldn’t save them in a 2-1 loss to the Yankees on Sunday. Hernandez allowed on run on five hits over six frames with the undependable Fernando Rodney serving up an 8th inning homer to absorb his 4th defeat. The M’s mustered seven hits and walked three times with Austin Jackson singling in Jesus Montero. Left hander JA Happ opens the series on the mound at Detroit for the second meeting this year. Happ is coming off of a 5-4 defeat to the Tigers where he gave up four runs on seven hits and three BB in four frames.

The Detroit Tigers are treading water in the American League Central and that’s not a good thing with Kansas City threatening to pull away. The Tigers dropped another game in the standings following a 9-3 loss to visiting Baltimore on Sunday. The struggles of Justin Verlander continued with seven runs scored on eight hits including a pair of homers through 3.2 frames to fall to 0-3. The offense racked up 14 hits and walked three times with Jefry Marte, Anthony Gose and Yoenis Cespedes driving in runs while Joes Iglesias turned a 4-4 effort in to three runs. Alfredo Simon draws Monday’s start against the visiting Mariners on Monday night. Simon has struggled the last five times out with a combined 28 runs allowed on 47 hits and nine BB over 22.2 innings.
The under is 9-1-1 in Seattle’s last 11 road games while the Mariners are 1-8 in Happ’s last 9 starts on grass and 1-7 in Happ’s last 8 starts. The over is 10-1 in Detroit’s last 11 home games and is 33-16-2 in their last 51 overall while going 33-16-2 in the Tigers last 51 on grass. The over is 9-2-1 in the last 12 meetings in Detroit. Detroit has been an over machine so perhaps they do it again with a little help from the Mariners…
