The New York Mets look to close the gap in the NL East when they visit the Washington Nationals on Monday.
The New York Mets are putting the pressure on the Nationals and have a chance to make up some ground in their weekday series. The Mets picked up a game in the standings with a 3-1,18 inning victory at St Louis on Sunday. Jon Niese tossed 7.1 scoreless with closer Jeurys Familia blew the save in the 13th on a solo homer. Sean Gillmartin and Carlos Torres combined for five shutout frames before the marathon ended. Kevin Plawecki singled in Curtis Granderson in the 13th with Ruben Tejada smacking a sacrifice fly in the 18th while Eric Campbell perfectly squeezed in Granderson for the third run. Matt Harvey gets the call to the mound on Monday for his third meeting with Washington in 2015. Harvey will be shooting for back to back wins after knocking off Atlanta 4-2 with two runs allowed on five hits in seven frames.

The Washington Nationals are where they want to be and simply want to distance themselves from the Mets in the National League East. That didn’t happen Sunday in a 5-0 loss to the visiting Dodgers for back to back losses. Max Scherzer kept his team in the game with a run allowed on seven hits over six innings before Blake Treinen surrendered four runs on five hits in 1/3 of an inning in the 9th. The Nats couldn’t solve Zach Greinke with a five hit, one walk effort that saw Yunel Escobar go 2-4 with Bryce Harper going 1-5 with a walk. Left hander Gio Gonzalez hopes to stay sharp when he opposes the visiting Mets on Monday. Gonzalez has given up two runs on 15 hits and five BB over 20 innings covering three outings.
The Mets are 8-22 in their last 30 road games. The under is 8-2 in Washington’s last 10 home games while the Nationals are 10-3 in their last 13 home games and the under is 9-3 in their last 12 overall. The under is 6-2 in the last 8 meetings and New York are 18-49 in the last 67 meetings. The under seems like the obvious choice after the Mets went 1-26 with runners in scoring position and that’s my lean for now…
