The Chicago Cubs and the Cincinnati Reds take the field in game two of their doubleheader.
The Chicago Cubs and the playoffs haven’t been mentioned in the same sentence for years but after seasons of losing the team is right in the middle of the postseason race. Obviously there is plenty of time for things to go south but the Cubbies have not shown that tendency to fall off the map as we have seen before. I do think any postseason race would be for the Wild Card and I also believe the Cubs need another bat or arm so they find themselves in the rare position of possibly picking up somebody for the stretch drive as opposed to trading away talent for prospects. Of course time will tell if any trades are made as Chicago might prefer to keep the roster as is and dip in to free agency with their eyes on the future. Dallas Beeler gets the ball in the second game of their twin bill at Great American Ball Park. Beeler’s lone start was a 5-3 win (ND) against St Louis two weeks ago where he gave up two runs on four hits in five frames.

The Cincinnati Reds sit in 4th place in the National League Central just ahead of the Brewers. Unfortunately the Reds are well off the pace in regards to securing a postseason berth with so many teams ahead of them in the Wild Card race. The team still has a shot at the Wild Card but that would take plenty of winning and getting even more help so the odds are stacked against them. My guess is if the team doesn’t show any life in the next week or so we see the Reds throw in the towel and start entertaining offers for some of their better players of which Johnny Cueto’s name has been surfacing. The Reds turn to Tony Cingrani for the game two start against the visiting Cubs on Wednesday. Cingrani has made 24 appearances in relief and has gone 0-3 with a 3.47 ERA with a pair of saves.
Chicago are 9-4 in their last 13 road games. The over is 7-3 in Cingrani’s last 10 starts on grass and is 10-3 in Cingrani’s last 10 starts overall. The Cubs are 10-3 in the last 13 meetings. This is a spot start for both hurlers who are not in the rotation for a reason. Caution is the word here but the numbers point to the over…
