The San Diego Padres and the San Francisco Giants face off on Wednesday at PETCO Park for game three of their MLB series of National League West teams.
The San Diego Padres were unable to follow up on Monday’s win as they lost to the Giants on Tuesday. Yangervis Solarte, Alexi Amarista, and Melvin Upton Jr. each had hits as the Padres scored three runs on four hits. Starting pitcher Odrisamer Despaigne allowed seven hits and six runs while striking out one over 5.0 innings to take the loss and fall to 3-7 for the season. For Wednesday’s game the Padres start James Shields who has allowed 117 hits and 53 earned runs while striking out 137 over 121.2 innings for an 8-3 record and a 3.92 ERA.

The San Francisco Giants returned to their hot play as they downed the Padres on Tuesday. Hunter Pence, Brandon Crawford, and Hector Sanchez each hit home runs as the Giants scored nine runs on nine hits. Starting pitcher Christopher Heston had another big night allowing just one hit and striking out six over 7.1 innings to get the win and raise his record to 10-5. For Wednesday’s game the Giants start Matt Cain who has allowed 17 hits and nine runs while striking out 14 over 16 innings for a 1-1 record and a 5.06 ERA.
San Diego is 18-38 in their last 56 games, 5-12 in their last 17 home games, and 2-6 in Shields’ last eight starts. San Diego is 10-4 in their last 13 games, 1-5 against a right-handed starter, and 10-23 in Cain’s last 33 starts. San Francisco is 2-4 in their last six games in San Diego.
Cain has yet to prove he is anywhere near the pitcher he was and until he does it will be tough to take him against a pitcher like Shields.
