The St. Louis Cardinals and the Pittsburgh Pirates face off on Thursday as they close out their series of the top two teams in the National League Central.

The St. Louis Cardinals look to make it three in a row over the Pirates after getting another win on Wednesday. Jhonny Peralta and Yadier Molina each had two hits and Matt Carpenter added a hit as the Cardinals scored four runs on nine hits. Starting pitcher Michael Wacha allowed nine hits and two runs while striking out seven over 6.0 innings to get the win and go to 14-4 for the season. For Thursday’s game the Cardinals start lance Lynn who has allowed 118 hits and 39 earned runs while striking out 136 over 127.1 innings for a 9-6 record and a 2.76 ERA.

USA TODAY Sports

The Pirates simply couldn’t capitalize on enough of their base runners as they lost to the Cardinals on Wednesday. Andrew McCutchen hit a home run, Gregory Polanco had three hits, and Jung-ho Kang had two hits as the Pirates scored two runs on nine hits. Starting pitcher Gerrit Cole allowed seven hits and four runs, three earned, over 5.1 innings to take the loss and fall to 14-6 for the season. For Thursday’s game the Pirates start Francisco Liriano who has allowed 99 hits and 45 earned runs while striking out 144 over 129.1 innings for a 7-6 record and a 3.13 ERA.

St. Louis is 6-1 in their last seven games, 57-19 in their last 76 home games, and 36-16 in Lynn’s last 52 home starts. Pittsburgh is 1-5 in game three of a series, 1-5 as a road underdog, and 7-0 in Liriano’s last seven starts. Pittsburgh is 15-37 in their last 52 games in Pittsburgh.

This on is a tough call but I look for the Pirates to scrap their way to a win here in what looks like a must win game.
