The Washington Nationals and the Colorado Rockies face off on Thursday at Coors Field as they close out their MLB series.
The Colorado Rockies were able to hold off the Nationals for the bulk of the game on Wednesday but they allowed them to score late and took the loss. Charlie Blackmon and Nolan Arenado had hits and Ben Paulsen scored a run as the Rockies scored one run on two hits. Starting pitcher Jorge De La Rosa allowed four hits and struck out six over 6.0 scoreless innings to not get a decision as Rafael Betancourt took the loss. For Thursday’s game the Rockies start Yohan Flande who has allowed 40 hits and 18 earned runs while striking out 23 over 38.2 innings for a 2-1 record and a 4.19 ERA.

The Washington Nationals didn’t take advantage of their chances until late on Wednesday but it wasn’t too late as they had time to get the win. Jayson Werth, Bryce Harper, and Yunel Escobar had two hits each as Nationals scored four runs on nine hits. Starting pitcher Stephen Strasburg allowed two hits and a run while striking out five over 7.0 innings to get the win and go to 7-6 for the season and Jonathan Papelbon earned his 20th save. For Thursday’s game the Nationals start Max Scherzer who has allowed 125 hits and 50 earned runs while striking out 194 over 165 innings for an 11-9 record and a 2.73 ERA.
Colorado is 4-1 in game three of a series, 2-6 in their last eight home games, and 4-10 in Flande’s last 14 starts. Washington is 1-4 against a left-handed starter, 2-6 in their last eight road games, and 8-3 in Scherzer’s last 11 starts as a road favorite. Washington is 6-1 in their last seven games in Colorado.
The Rockies couldn’t hit Strasburg on Wednesday and I doubt they have much more success against Scherzer here so my free pick is the Nationals.
