The Cincinnati Reds and the Arizona Diamondbacks face off on Saturday in game three of their MLB series.
The Cincinnati Reds continued their struggles this season as they lost to the Diamondbacks on Friday. Brayan Pena had three hits, Joey Votto hit a home run, and Todd Frazier had two hits as the Reds scored three runs on nine hits. Starting pitcher David Holmberg allowed 11 hits and five runs while striking out two over 5.0 innings to take the loss and fall to 1-3 for the season. For Saturday’s game the Reds start Anthony DeSclafani who has allowed 138 hits and 57 earned runs while striking out 104 over 138 innings for a 7-8 record and a 3.72 ERA.

The Arizona Diamondbacks moved to just a game under .500 for the season as they beat the Reds on Friday. A.J. Pollock and Yasmany Tomas each hit home runs and Chris Owings had two hits as the Diamondbacks scored six runs on 13 hits. Starting pitcher Rubby De La Rosa allowed seven hits and two runs while striking out six over 7.0 innings to get the win and go to 11-5 for the season and Brad Ziegler earned his 23rd save. For Saturday’s game the Diamondbacks start Randall Delgado who has allowed 44 hits and 15 earned runs while striking out 48 over 50 innings for a 4-3 record and a 2.70 ERA in 43 relief appearances this season.
Cincinnati is 1-5 as a home favorite, 0-7 in their last seven games, and 0-4 DeSclafani’s last four starts against the National League West. Arizona is 12-4 in their last 16 games against a team with a losing record, 7-0 on the road against a team with a losing home record, and 2-5 in Delgado’s last seven road starts. Arizona is 5-1 in their last six games against Cincinnati.
The Reds have been slumping but against Delgado they face a pitcher with skewed stats as relief pitcher’s ERA can be not such a great indicator of what has actually transpired with inherited runners and I look for that number to be exposed here as the Reds win.
