The San Francisco Giants look to stay in the National League West race with a win at the Pittsburgh Pirates.
The San Francisco Giants can’t afford any kind of losing streak if they expect to stay in the National League West playoff conversation. The Giants fell to Pittsburgh 3-2 on Saturday and have dropped three of four. Starter Mike Leake received a no decision with a run allowed one hit on a solo jack over six frames before George Kontos. SF totaled four hits and walked four times with Ehire Adrianza singling in a run while Matt Duffy and Gregor Blanco scored. Ryan Vogelsong makes his second start of the year against the Pirates on Sunday afternoon. Vogelsong comes off of a 2-0 victory at St Louis where he tossed two hit shutout over six frames.

The Pittsburgh Pirates are in the same boat as San Francisco as they simply can’t afford losing streaks. The Pirates haven’t lost too many of late with Saturday’s win being their 8th in eleven contests. Starter Gerrit Cole was outstanding with an unearned run plated on three hits and a trio of BB while whiffing eight through seven innings in a no decision. The Buccos managed four hits and a walk with Starling Marte and Jung-ho Kang smacking solo bombs. Left hander Francisco Liriano looks to put an end to his recent struggles when he opposes visiting San Francisco on Sunday. Liriano did not get a decision in a 9-8 win against Arizona with five runs scored over seven innings.
San Francisco are 2-7 in their last 9 road games and the over is 32-15-5 in their last 52 road games while going 10-4-1 in Vogelsong’s last 15 road starts. Pittsburgh are 36-15 in their last 51 home games and the over is 12-5 in their last 17 home games while the Pirates are 54-26 in their last 80 overall. The odds are huge for a pretty good Giants squad so I’d either go small on them or walk away…
