The Tampa Bay Rays and the Minnesota Twins face off on Thursday at Tropicana Field as they close out their MLB series.
The Tampa Bay Rays were big favorites on Wednesday but that didn’t help them as they fell to the Twins. Daniel Nava and Evan Longoria hit home runs and James Loney had two hits as the Rays scored three runs on nine hits. Starting pitcher Chris Archer allowed nine hits and four runs while striking out 12 over 6.0 innings to take the loss and fall to 11-10 for the season. For Thursday’s game the Rays start Drew Smyly who has allowed 23 hits and 10 earned runs while striking out 27 over 26.1 innings for a 1-2 record and a 3.42 ERA.

The Minnesota Twins took care of business late on Wednesday to come back and beat the Rays. Eduardo Escobar hit a home run, Joe Mauer had three hits, and Byron Buxton had two hits as the Twins scored five runs on 13 hits. Starting pitcher Tyler Duffey allowed seven hits and two runs while striking out four over 5.1 innings to not get a decision as Brian Duensing got the win and Kevin Jepsen earned the save. For Thursday’s game the Twins start Tommy Milone who has allowed 89 hits and 38 earned runs while striking out 66 over 92.2 innings for a 6-3 record and a 3.69 ERA.
Tampa Bay is 6-1 against a left-handed starter, 2-5 following a loss, and 4-0 In Smyly’s last four starts as a favorite. Minnesota is 7-0 as an underdog, 9-4 in their last 13 Thursday games, and 1-4 in Milone’s last five road starts. Minnesota is 5-1 in the last six meetings fo these two.
The Twins proved on Wednesday they clearly the better team and I see them getting another win here.
