The St. Louis Cardinals and the Washington Nationals face off on Tuesday at Busch Stadium for game two of their MLB series.
The St. Louis Cardinals didn’t play their best baseball on Monday but it was still good enough to get the win against the Nationals. Jhonny Peralta, Jason Heyward, and Kolten Wong were among those with two hits each as the Cardinals scored eight runs on 13 hits. Starting pitcher John Lackey allowed four hits and two runs while striking out eight over 6.0 innings to not factor in the decision as Kevin Siegrist got the win. For Tuesday’s game the Cardinals start Marco Gonzalez who makes his first big league appearance of the season after going 4-2 with a 4.15 ERA last season.

The Washington Nationals managed to battle back on Monday but it didn’t last long as they fell to the Cardinals. Ryan Zimmerman had three hits including a home run, Jayson Werth had two hits, and Ian Desmond had a hit as the Nationals scored five runs on eight hits. Starting pitcher Gio Gonzalez allowed five hits and three runs while striking out four over 6.0 innings to not get a decision as Casey Janssen blew the save and took the loss. For Tuesday’s game the Nationals start Joe Ross who has allowed 56 hits and 24 earned runs while striking out 65 over 66.2 innings for a 5-5 record and a 3.24 ERA.
St. Louis is 9-1 in their last 10 games, 7-2 in their last nine game two of a series, and 0-4 in their last four games with the total set at 6.5 or lower. Washington is 4-1 following a loss, 26-55 in their last 81 games as an underdog, and 0-4 in Ross’ last four road starts. Washington is 7-21 in the last 28 meetings of these two.
The Nationals have to feel like they let one get away on Monday and while the Cardinals are the better team I like the Nationals here.
