The Chicago Cubs and Pittsburgh Pirates conclude their series at PNC Park on Wednesday.
The Chicago Cubs can still capture the National League Central with the Wild Card looking good right now. The Cubs had dropped three in a row before squeezing out a 2-1 win in game two of their doubleheader at Pittsburgh Tuesday. Jon Lester carried the team on his back with a complete game effort with nine strikeouts. The offense consisted of eight hits with Dexter Fowler and and Anthony Rizzo driving in runs. The Cubs send ace Jake Arrieta to the hill in the series finale’ against the Pirates. Arrieta has allowed one run in his last five outings on 18 hits covering 37 innings of work.

The Pittsburgh Pirates have two goals and they are to hold off the Cubs and chase down the Cardinals. The Pirates had won eight of eleven before dropping game two of their twin bill. Starter JA Happ threw well in defeat with both runs plated on eight hits through 5.2 innings while striking out eight. The Buccos mustered five hits and a free pass with Aramis Ramirez going 2-4 and scoring their lone run in the 7th. The Pirates send AJ Burnett to the mound for the second time since coming off the disabled list. Burnett struggled the first time out with three runs plated on three hits and a trio of BB in five innings of a 6-4 loss to Milwaukee.
The over is 6-1-1 in Chicago’s last 8 overall and is 6-1-1 in their last 8 on grass while the Cubs are 7-3 in their last 10 overall. Pittsburgh are 40-13 in their last 53 home games and are 11-4 in their last 15 Wednesday games. Arrieta looks like the Cy Young award winner and Burnett is on a pitch count so I don’t have much to go on…
