The Washington Nationals and the Miami Marlins face off on Friday at Nationals Park in a matchup of two of the better pitchers in baseball.
The Washington Nationals had an early lead on Thursday but they let it get away as they lost to the Marlins. Ian Desmond hit a home run, Bryce Harper had two hits, and Jayson Werth had a hit as the Nationals scored four runs on six hits. Starting pitcher Tanner Roark allowed eight hits and six runs while striking out four over 5.0 innings to take the loss and fall to 4-6 for the season. For Friday’s game the Nationals start Max Scherzer who has allowed 162 hits and 64 earned runs while striking out 231 over 198 innings for a 12-11 record and a 2.91 ERA.

The Miami Marlins are looking for momentum to carry into the offseason and they gained some on Friday getting the win. Martin Prado and Justin Bour each hit home runs and Dee Gordon was among one of those with two hits as the Marlins scored six runs on 11 hits. Starting pitcher Jared Cosart allowed three hits and two runs while striking out four over 6.0 innings to get the win and go to 2-4 for the season. For Friday’s game the Marlins start Jose Fernandez who has allowed 36 hits and 11 earned runs while striking out 60 over 48 innings for a 5-0 record and a 2.06 ERA.
Washington is 4-1 in their last five games, 8-3 against a right-handed starter, and 1-5 in Scherzer’s last six home starts. Miami is 6-1 in their last seven road games, 7-2 in their last nine games, and 20-7 in Fernandez’s last 27 starts. Miami is 10-26 in their last 36 games in Washington.
Scherzer just hasn’t been given much support and he won’t get it here so I look for the Marlins to peck away and get the win.
