The San Diego Padres and the San Francisco Giants face off on Wednesday at Petco Park in a MLB battle of National League West teams.

The San Diego Padres are closing out their disappointing season and they lost a home to the Giants on Tuesday. Cory Spangenberg and Brett Wallace each hit home runs and Yangervis Solarte had two hits as the Padres scored two runs on six hits. Starting pitcher Tyson Ross allowed four hits and two runs while striking out 11 over 6.0 innings to take the loss and fall to 10-11 for the season. For Wednesday’s game the padres start Andrew Cashner who has allowed 189 hits and 82 earned runs while striking out 152 over 173.2 innings for a 6-15 record and a 4.25 ERA.

USA TODAY Sports

The San Francisco Giants haven’t been eliminated from the post-season yet and they helped their cause on Tuesday beating the Padres. Angel Pagan hit a home run and Alejando De Aza and Brandon Crawford each had two hits as the Giants scored four runs on eight hits. Starting pitcher Chris Heston allowed two hits and struck out seven over 4.1 innings to not get a decision as George Kontos got the win and Santiago Casilla earned his 35th save. For Wednesday’s game the Giants start Jake Peavy who has allowed 88 hits and 42 earned runs while striking out 68 over 92.2 innings for a 7-6 record and a 4.08 ERA.

San Diego is 3-9 against the NL West, 3-9 in their last 12 games, and 1-4 in Cashner’s last five starts. San Francisco is 7-3 in their last 10 games, 2-5 in game two of a series, and 4-1 in Peavy’s last five starts. San Francisco has won their last seven meetings with San Diego.

I am not expecting much scoring so my free pick is under the total that has been aggressively set at nine.
