The Colorado Rockies and Arizona Diamondbacks open their season Monday night at Chase Field.
The Colorado Rockies head into the season with pretty much the same team that won 68 games last year. We know what the Rockies can do on the offensive end, as Nolan Arenado, Carlos Gonzalez and DJ LeMahieu make for a respectable lineup. The concern for the Colorado Rockies this season will be fixing a pitching staff that had an ERA of 5.04 last season. The Rockies are going to score runs in boatloads this season, but that won’t mean much once again if they can’t keep the opponent from putting up crooked numbers as well. Jorge De La Rosa gets the ball, and he was 9-7 with a 4.17 ERA and 134 strikeouts last season. De La Rosa is 9-8 with a 2.94 ERA and 102 strikeouts in his career against the Diamondbacks.
USA TODAY Sports
The Arizona Diamondbacks are a trendy pick to make the playoffs this season with the offensive firepower already in place and the additions made to their pitching staff. Paul Goldschmidt is an MVP candidate, David Peralta is a blossoming star and A.J. Pollock is only getting better as he enters his fourth season. Add Zack Greinke and Shelby Miller to the rotation, and the Arizona Diamondbacks look like a team that can make the playoffs for the first time since the 2011 season. Zack Greinke takes the hill, and he was 19-3 with a 1.66 ERA and 200 strikeouts last season. Greinke is 7-3 with a 3.69 ERA and 97 strikeouts in his career against the Rockies.
The Rockies are 38-88 in their last 126 road games and 7-3 in their last 10 during game 1 of a series. The Diamondbacks are 4-0 in their last 4 vs. National League West and 5-2 in their last 7 overall. The Rockies are 15-38 in the last 53 meetings in Arizona and 1-5 in the last 6 meetings overall.
I really like this Arizona team, and it also helps to have Greinke on the mound. De La Rosa simply isn't an opening day quality pitcher. I like the home team by two or more runs.
