And so it begins for the 2016 Chicago Cubs, an interleague trip to Angel Stadium in Anaheim to take on the Los Angeles Angels.
The Cubs have more expectation on their shoulders this season than possibly any team in living memory. A supremely talented young Chicago Cubs roster improved in the off season with the additions of John Lackey, Ben Zobrist and Jason Heyward. The Cubs came up short last season losing to the Mets in the NLCS but there is an air of expectation about the Cubs this season and the fans are 100% behind it. Joe Maddon has acknowledged that the expectation of a better season is going to be tough to accomplish after the Cubs won 97 games last season and still only finished third in the Division. Maddon hands the ball to NL Cy Young award winner Jake Arrieta who has consistantly improved over the last three years and will make his second opening day start (starting for the Orioles in 2012). Arrieta finished the 2015 season with 22 wins and an ERA of 1.77. With a potent line up containing Kris Bryant, Kyle Schwarber , Dexter Fowler and Jason Heyward this Cubs team will be expected to score heavy but they struggled somewhat in Spring training. The Cubs finished off their spring training with a 4-6 loss to the Angels can they turn it around on opening day?

The Los Angeles Angels missed the playoffs last season despite an 85 win season. Mike Trout since his arrival in the league has been a revelation, part of a new generation of young players that are taking the league by storm and making baseball entertaining again. Hittin over 300 for his career Trout consistantly makes phenomenal plays in the outfield and at the plate. If the Los Angeles Angels are going to be successful over the coming year it will be built around the ability of Mike Trout. The Angels have had a pretty strong Spring and finished a 19-8 Spring season with a win over the Cubs. The Angels have a wealth of experience in their line up with Albert Pujols the long time Cardinal to go with young aquisitions Yunel Escobar and Andrelton Simmons. The Angels will go with Garret Richards on the mound, a strong 2015 season seen Richards pitch 207 Innings with 15 mins and a 3.65 ERA, Richards unseated Jerred Weaver as the Angels opening day starter and the Angels believe that Richards can be even better in 2016.
While the expectation is high with both of these teams I think that the Cubs are looking all the way to the World Series and in April that's a long way to look ahead. The Angels have alot of quality throughout their side and if Richards can give the team a quality start I think the Angels could shock the Cubs here and for me the Angels just represent more value. I'm going to take the home underdogs to get a win that surprises the MLB world.
