The Seattle Mariners will travel to the Globe Life Park in Arlington to take on last season's AL West winners Texas Rangers with a pitching match up of the highest quality on display as Felix Hernandez squares up to Cole Hamels.
The Texas Rangers won the AL West Last season after a surprisingly strong season. Cole Hamels came over to the Rangers in a mid season trade from the Phillies last season and went 7-1 in 12 starts and an ERA of 3.65. Hamels is a genuine ace and will be a keystone that the Texas Rangers can build around. With the Rangers getting Ian Desmond in the offseason they have added a quality bat at SS but Desmond had troubles with errors at the Nationals and struggled in the playoff and in big game situations. There wont be as much pressure on Desmond here though with a stronger batting line up in Texas , Prince Fielder, Adrian Beltre , Shin-Coo Choo will provide the experienced bats and the youngsters Roughnod Odour and Delino De Shields can most definitely provide additional quality in a line up that is projected to score plenty of runs. The Rangers with Yu Darvish due back in May are going to be a team that can definitely compete for another AL West title and they will look to get the season off to a winning start at home on Monday.

Last season many pundits were picking the Seattle Mariners to be in the shake up at the end of the season, not just in the AL West but also in the World Series hunt. Surprisingly the Mariners are not receiving much love this preseason but in my opinion the team has addressed their main problems with additions to the bull pens and an addition of some pace in the form of Nori Aoki and former Ranger Leony's Martin. Seattle still have the core of their line up in tact with Nelson Cruz, Kyle Seager and Robinson Cano all healthy and ready to help Seattle compete , part of the reason so many were picking Seattle last season was due to the core line up and the potential pitchers who were filling out the Seattle rotation. Felix Hernandez has never pitched in the post season but he is as a quality starter and a true ace. Hernandez had eighteen wins last season the second most he has had as a starting pitcher in his eleven years in the league although his 3.45 ERA was the highest it's been since 2008 and there were some signs that his fastball may be slowing down the 29 year old is still one of the best pitchers in the league.
This one is a tough match up to call. We have two genuine aces on the mound and two teams who are in very similar positions with very similar line ups. For me though I think Seattle have a couple of more game winners in their line up in Cruz and Cano. I like Seattle as a dog here with King Felix on the mound. Not many teams are going to be favourite against King Felix and I'm not sure Hamels and Texas deserve that favouritism in this spot. Definite value here in Seattle.
