The Oakland Athletics open a weekend series with the Seattle Mariners at Safeco Field on Friday.
It’s too early to determine what the Oakland Athletics are now or will be in the future but it was obvious they lacked enough pitching and hitting in a 6-1 defeat at the hands of the visiting White Sox on Thursday. Starter Kendall Graveman threw the ball well with a pair of runs plated on three hits and a walk through 5.1 frames before Liam Hendriks was tagged for four runs on six hits in the 9th. The Athletics struggled at the plate with just four hits an three bases on balls with Chris Coughlin going 2-4 with a pair of doubles with Danny Valencia scoring. Oakland turns to left hander Eric Surkamp to the mound for his first start since 2013. Surkamp made 35 relief appearances for the White Sox in 2014 with a 2-0 record and 4.81 ERA over 24.1 frames.

The Seattle Mariners are probably know for their lack of production at the plate over the years but in back to back victories at Texas there was no shortage of scoring. A five run 9th inning explosion led the way to a 9-5 victory versus the Rangers on Wednesday to save a shabby effort from starter Wade Miley who was charged with all five runs on seven hits while whiffing seven over six frames. A 14 hit, six walk attack bailed him out with Leonys Martin going deep and driving in two runs and scoring twice while Robinson Cano homered two times and knocked in five. Kyle Seager also drove in two and scored two times as every starter but one reached base. The Mariners hand the ball to Taijuan Walker for what should be his second full season. In 29 starts a season ago Walker went 11-8 with a 4.86 ERA covering 169.2 innings.
Oakland are 7-19 in their last 26 Friday games and the over is 28-11-3 in their last 42 overall while going 28-11-3 in their last 42 on grass. Seattle are 4-10 in their last 14 overall and are 4-10 in their last 14 games on grass while the over is 27-13-3 in their last 43 home games. Oakland are 2-6 in the last 8 meetings and the over is 5-2-1 in the last 8 meetings in Seattle. My take on this is I know more about Walker then Surkamp…
