The Seattle Mariners host the Texas Rangers on Monday to begin a weekday series at Safeco Field.
The Texas Rangers have their sights set on the American League West title although it’s too early to see where this team stands right now. On Sunday it was a lack of offense that was costly in a 3-1 defeat at Los Angeles. Starter Martin Perez threw a strong game with all three runs plated on seven hits and five free passes over 6.1 frames which dropped him to 0-1. The bats totaled seven hits and walked once with Nomar Mazara posing the biggest threat with a 3-4 effort and his first long ball of the season. The Rangers send out Colby Lewis to face the Seattle Mariners for the second time. Lewis did not get a decision in a 9-5 loss to the Mariners with three runs plated on six hits over six innings.

The Seattle Mariners are trying to change their image of a team that struggles to score runs but a 2-1, ten inning loss to visiting Oakland on Sunday certainly didn’t help ‘that’ image. Ace Felix Hernandez was his usual stingy self but fell victim to a lack of support as he received a no decision with a three hit shutout over seven innings while striking out ten. Joel Peralta served up a solo homer in the 8th to blow the save while Nick Vincent gave up a solo blast in the 10th to absorb the loss. The Mariners had opportunities at the plate with six hits and five bases on balls with Nelson Cruz going 2-4 and scoring an unearned run. Hisashi Iwakuma takes on AL West rival Texas for the second straight time to open the season. Iwakuma defeated the Rangers the first time 10-2 with both runs allowed on six hits and three BB in five frames.
The over is 7-3-2 in Texas last 12 road games and is 20-9-3 in their last 32 overall while going 20-8-2 in Lewis' last 30 starts on grass. Seattle are 1-7 in their last 8 Monday games and are 4-12 in their last 16 overall while going 4-12 in their last 16 games on grass. The under is 13-4-2 in Lewis' last 19 starts vs. Seattle and Texas are 2-6 in the last 8 meetings. I don’t like the chalk but Iwakuma is the choice for me…
