The Boston Red Sox and the Tampa Bay Rays face off on Wednesday in game two of their MLB series of AL East teams.
The Boston Red Sox lost their third game in a row, all at home, as they fell to the Rays on Tuesday in extra innings. Only Jackie Bradley Jr. managed a hit as Chris Young and Ryan Hanigan each reached via walk as the Red Sox failed to score a single run. Starting pitcher Joe Kelly left after just two-thirds of an inning, as it was Matt Barnes who took the loss. For Wednesday’s game the Red Sox look to stop the losing as they start Rick Porcello who has allowed nine hits and seven runs while striking out 15 over 12.1 innings for a 2-0 record and a 5.11 ERA.

The Tampa Bay Rays have had trouble scoring runs this season but they managed to squeeze three across on Tuesday to get the win. Kevin Kiermaier hit a home run, Logan Forsythe had two hits, and Evan Longoria was among those Rays with a hit as Tampa Bay scored three runs on six hits. Starting pitcher Drew Smyly allowed just one hit and struck out 11 over 8.0 innings to not factor in the decision as Erasmo Ramirez picked up his third win and Alex Colome earned his second save. For Wednesday’s game the Rays start Chris Archer who has allowed 22 hits and 10 earned runs while striking out 23 over 15.1 innings for a 0-3 record and a 5.87 ERA.
Boston is 2-7 against a team with a losing record, 4-10 in their last 14 games on grass, 5-2 in their last seven home games against a team with a road winning percentage less than .400, and 5-2 in Porcello’s last seven starts against the American League East. Tampa Bay is 1-5 in their last six road games, 4-10 in their last 14 road games against a team with a losing home record, and 1-5 in Archer’s last six starts against the AL East. Tampa Bay has won five of their last six games in Boston.
Bot of these pitchers are prone to some horrific innings but the Red Sox are just one of the worst teams in baseball right now so the play here is the Rays.
