The San Diego Padres and the Pittsburgh Pirates face off on Wednesday at Petco Park as they continue their MLB series.
The San Diego Pades have had trouble scoring runs this season but on Tuesday they scored just enough to beat the Pirates. Wil Myers, Derek Norris, and Adam Rosales each hit home runs as the Padres scored five runs on nine hits. Starting pitcher Colin Rea allowed seven hits and three runs while striking out six over 5.0 innings to get the win and raise his record to 1-1 and Fernando Rodney earned his second save. For Wednesday’s game the Padres start Drew Pomeranz who has allowed seven hits and four runs while striking out 15 over 11 innings for a 1-1 record and a 3.27 ERA.
USA TODAY Sports
The Pittsburgh Pirates jumped out to an early lead on Tuesday but they were unable to make it stand up as they lost to the Padres. Josh Harrison and Jordy Mercer each had two hits and David Freese and Andrew McCutchen were among those getting hits as the Pirates scored four runs on 11 hits. Starting pitcher Francisco Liriano allowed six hits and four runs while striking out four over 4.1 innings to take the loss and fall to 1-1 for the season. For Wednesday’s game the Pirates start Jeff Locke who has allowed 12 hits and four runs while striking five over 10.2 innings for and 0-1 record and a 2.53 ERA.
San Diego is 18-35 in their last 53 games, 3-6 in their last nine home games against a team with a winning record, 1-4 at home against a left-handed starter, and 2-5 against a team with a winning record. Pittsburgh is 47-19 against the NL West, 5-1 against a left-handed starter, 10-5 in their last 15 road games, and 2-5 in Locke’s last seven starts. Pittsburgh is 4-2 in their last six games against San Diego.
With the total set at 7.5 I can see this going over as both of these pitcher are below their career ERA’s.
